MONMOUTH, Ore. – It was the second home meet of the early outdoor season and the Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams took advantage coming away with several personal-best marks and other top showings during the WOU Tri-Meet on Saturday.
Right out of the gate, Moana Gianotti set the tone for the Wolves in the women's hammer hitting a new PR mark of 148-06 to finish fourth in the event behind three throwers from Oregon State. She then added a mark of 126-00 in the discus to also place fourth behind a trio of Beavers. Gianotti was joined by a couple other Wolves in the event including Liliana Lyness in sixth (126-01) and Ellie Osborn in eighth.
Jalon Fields reached a distance of 22-02.25 in the men's long jump to set a new PR and win the event. Fields led a host of Wolves in the long jump with Elf Nafziger in second (21-03.25), Deshaun Stevens in third (20-10.00), Jacob Flury in fifth, Marley Harrison in sixth, Jake Thompson in seventh and Antonio Robledo in eighth.
Sam Cole continued his strong start to the spring winning the men's hammer throwing to a mark of 162-06. Teammates Karsten Collins and Owen Collins also competed in the hammer with Karsten coming in second with a distance of 153-02 and Owen in fourth with a mark of 142-06.
Caitlin Heldt set a new PR in the women's 1,500 with a time of 4:49.99 to come in fifth overall. She was followed by teammate Ashley Hauger in sixth with a time of 4:58.64. WOU had three others also post times in the event with Lindie Larson in 12th, Shannon Smith in 13th and Tresai McCarver in 14th.
Maya Hopwood won both the women's 100-meter and the 200-meter, crossing with a time of 12.56 in the 100 and then a time of 26.45 in the 200. She was joined in the 100 by teammate Lauren Berry who crossed in third with a time of 13.34. Michaela Yonkman joined Hopwood in the 200 coming in fourth.
Justin Crosswhite was the first one in during the men's 800-meter when he posted a time of 1:53.38. Several other Wolves were also in the 800 with teammate Emmett Klus next to come in second with a time of 1:56.45. Trey Reed crossed in fourth, Adam Alnazer in fifth and Bryce Mefford in sixth.
Ana Popchock nearly set a new PR in the women's 100-meter hurdles when she finished with a time of 15.38 to place fourth. Teammates Yonkman and Rilee Carstensen were right behind with Yonkman in fifth with a time of 16.39 and Carstensen in sixth with a time of 16.68. Makenzie Smith and Madeline Lambing also competed for the Wolves with Smith coming in 12th and Lambing in 13th.
Bailey Smith made a strong debut in the men's 1,500 winning the event with a time of 4:05.28. He was followed by teammates Dominic Giordano in fifth (4:09.92), Dustyn Mckenney in sixth, Cedar Davis-Frankfort in eighth and Talon Aguilar in ninth.
Karsten Collins won the men's discus with a mark of 138-04 coming on his third attempt.
Jenelle Hurley collected a sixth-place finish in the women's long jump hitting a distance of 17-11.50 on her first attempt. Berry also competed in the event and set a new PR when she hit a distance of 17-05.25 on her first attempt to place ninth. Amity Deters and Popchock also entered for long jump with Deters coming in 11th (16-05.75) and Popchock in 12th (16-00.50).
Stevens also competed in the men's 110-meter hurdles coming in with a time of 20.33 as he was the only entry in the event.
JJ Walker was one of two to enter in the men's 400 as he posted the top time of 53.64.
Osborn also threw in the women's discus coming in fifth.
Deters also entered in the women's high jump coming in fourth.
Nafziger also competed in the men's high jump hitting a height of 5-09.25 to come in second.
In the men's javelin, Austin Goldstein led the way for the Wolves winning the event with a throw of 173-00. Walker also entered the event for the Wolves and came in fourth.
In the women's javelin, Kaylee Wright led the way with a throw of 129-01 to come in third. Krystal Andres was the next top throw in for WOU with a mark of 118-01 to place sixth. Lyndee McLauchlin came in seventh and Smith in eighth.
In the men's shot put, Owen Collins led the way winning the event with a throw of 47-02.50. Cole placed third with a throw of 44-02.00.
Then the women's 4x400 relay team of Popchock, Yonkman, Hurley and Carstensen came in second with a time of 4:07.46.
