Soccer Set to Begin Spring Season This Sunday Against Carroll College

VANCOUVER, Wash. – With their season shifting to the spring, the Western Oregon University soccer team is set to begin the new season this Sunday when they will face Carroll (MT) College in a neutral site game that will be played in Vancouver, Wash.

It's been awhile since the Wolves were on the field with their last game taking place in the GNAC Championships against Seattle Pacific all the way back on Nov. 14, 2019. While that season seems like a distant memory, it was a season to certainly remember for GNAC Coach of the Year Kacey Bingham and the Wolves. The 10-win season was the most for WOU since 2002 and they reached the GNAC Championships for the first time since 2013. As a team, WOU put together numbers in several categories including total points, goals and assists that hadn't been reached since the 2003 season.

This year's team will have a lot of new faces on it with 15 freshmen arriving on the team for this season. There will be a trio of seniors set to lead the way with Alyssa Tomasini, Alexie Morris and Melinda Ortega. A pair of juniors return in Kendall Rooney and Hannah Cabral, as well as several sophomores including Cassidy Flammang, Emily Wheeler, Erika Gonzalez Moreno and Hannah Rispler. There will be a new transfer sophomore on the team in Chloe Smith who arrives after playing at Concordia (OR).

Following the 2019 season, Tomasini led the team in multiple categories including points (25), goals (9) and assists (7). She posted four game-winning goals and started all 19 games. Graduating seniors followed Tomasini in most of those categories with Isabelle Creighton and Selene Konyn tying for second in points with 14 apiece. Konyn was second in goals with five, while Creighton was second in assists with six. Fellow graduating senior Kaili Brundage tied with Creighton for third on the team in goals with four. Along the backline, WOU had a pair of players along the backline that led the team in minutes with both Jacky Beristain and Malia Napoleon playing 1,792 minutes.

In addition to Tomasini returning, several other returners saw time in 2019 with Rispler playing 12 games and logging 878 minutes, Gonzalez Moreno played in 17 games and logged 632 minutes, Morris played in 11 games that included 359 total minutes and Ortega played in five games tallying 70 minutes.

In goal, graduating senior Alex Qualls saw a majority of the time in 2019 starting all 19 games and playing all but 45 minutes that season. She tallied seven shutouts (one combined), had a 1.13 goals against average and made 57 saves. Flammang saw time in the first game of the season against Western Colorado playing 45 minutes and contributing to the combined shutout.

Carroll College is an NAIA school based out of Helena, Mont., and this will be the first meeting between the teams. The Saints have yet to play a game this season as well after going 9-7-2 in 2019. They finished the season that year advancing to the Cascade Conference Tournament before falling to Eastern Oregon, 1-0.

Makayla Welch led the team with 16 points on eight goals, while Katie Martin added 10 points (four goals, two assists). Carroll had eight players tally at least five points in 2019. In goal, Sydney Green started all 17 games and came away with a 1.25 goals against average, 54 saves and five shutouts.

WOU and Carroll will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. There will be no live video/stats with the game being played at a neutral site.
