EUGENE, Ore. – Shayla Solomon, Ana Popchock and Dominic Giordano all won their events during day two of the Lane Invite on Saturday. Several other strong results helped highlight another good day for the Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams.
Right away in the first event of the day, Solomon took the title in the women's 800-meter when she crossed with a time of 2:21.74. Ashley Hauger was right behind in second crossing with a time of 2:23.94. The time for Hauger was a new season-best mark.
Popchock led four Wolves in the women's 400-meter hurdles when she crossed with a first-place time of 1:05.58. Michaela Yonkman was right behind coming in second with a time of 1:06.99. Rilee Carstensen came in fourth with a time of 1:12.15 and Madeline Lambing added a time of 1:13.88 to place fifth.
Running in his first men's 5,000-meter of the outdoor season, Dominic Giordano led the group in the event when he crossed in first with a time of 15:36.65.
Emmett Klus set a new top-time in the men's 800 when he came in second at 1:55.24. The only person that finished ahead of him was WOU alum Derek Holdsworth who crossed with a time of 1:51.44. It was an all WOU top-four with Curt Knott following Klus in third with a time of 1:57.24. Wyatt Smith came in fourth with a time of 1:58.84. Carson Austin came in sixth (2:00.68, new top-time), Bryce Mefford followed in eighth (2:02.95), Matthew Schenk in 10th (2:03.88, new top-time), Talon Aguilar in 11th (2:04.26) and Chase Eckenfels in 12th (2:04.29).
Aaron Hanible set a new top-time this outdoor season in the men's 400-meter hurdles when he placed second with a time of 55.88.
This coming week, WOU will host the Pop Up Meet on Friday morning.
