BILLINGS, Mont. -- If 37 runs in a doubleheader sweep on Thursday wasn't enough offense, the Western Oregon University baseball team came back with 38 more runs on Friday to complete the four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series sweep of Montana State Billings. WOU took the first game, 28-13 and then completed the sweep with a 10-1 win in the nightcap.
In the first game in which WOU scored 28 runs, several records were set. Blayze Arcano and Josh Berman each hit three home runs to set a new school single game record for home runs in a game. Arcano tied the school record for RBI in a game with nine, which also makes him the fourth in GNAC history to drive in nine in a game. The eight total team home runs are a new school and GNAC record for a single game. Arcano and Anthony Zellner each scored five times in the game to tie the GNAC single game record and were just one short of tying the WOU record. The 28 runs are the most since the Wolves scored 32 against Central Washington in 2019. WOU has scored 32 twice in program history and have now scored 28 in a game twice with the other occurrence against Central Washington in 2004.
Overall in the two games, Arcano had seven hits, 15 RBI, four home runs, seven runs scored and a triple.
"This weekend has been huge for us as a team. Getting our last series canceled was really unfortunate, but I think we handled it pretty well," Arcano said. "I'm extremely proud of my teammates and I hope I can continue to do my part in winning more games."
WOU outscored the 'Jackets 75-35 in the four-game set.
In the record-breaking first game of the day, WOU (16-6, 15-5 GNAC) put together a huge second inning and never looked back.
After MSUB (8-28, 8-20 GNAC) scored two runs in the first inning, the Wolves answered with nine in the second frame.
Connor McCord was hit-by-pitch and Berman singled to center to put runners at the corners. Justyn Herzog drove in the first run with an RBI groundout to second. Hunter Johnson walked and Zellner was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Arcano got his big day going by crushing the first pitch he saw deep over the right field fence for a grand slam and a 5-2 lead. Sam Jones and Derek Maiben quickly had runners back on the bases with back-to-back singles. McCord was hit-by-pitch for the second time in the inning to re-load the bases. Berman then added his own grand slam when he smashed the 3-1 pitch over the left field fence to push the lead to 9-2.
After MSUB got a run back in the home half, WOU answered back with a pair of runs in the third. Zellner was hit-by-pitch and Arcano walked in front of a double to right-center by Jones to score Zellner. Arcano then came home on a fielding error to move the lead to 11-3.
Following a run by MSUB, Berman opened the fourth inning with a solo shot to left. Herzog and Johnson both singled and moved up a base on a passed ball. Zellner singled down the right field line to score both runners. WOU would get one more run in the inning when Derek Maiben singled home Zellner for the 15-4 advantage.
MSUB tallied a run in the fifth and Arcano was ready to answer when he connected on a two-run homer in the sixth on a 3-1 pitch to score Zellner who singled to open the frame. A pair of errors helped bring in the next run. With another error keeping two runners on, Berman hit another long ball drilling his three-run shot over the center field fence to push the lead to 21-5 for his third round-tripper of the game.
Hank Forrest hit his first homer with the Wolves in the seventh, a solo homer on a 2-2 pitch to move the lead to 22-5.
MSUB recorded a run in the home half and the WOU offense went right back to work in the eighth. An error allowed the first runner to reach and after a single by Zellner, Arcano smacked his third home run of the game, this one a three-run variety on the first pitch to center for a 25-6 lead.
MSUB picked up three runs in the eighth and then WOU put the finishing touches on the game in the ninth.
With a runner on via an error, Arcano singled and then Forrest smoked his second homer of the game over the left-center field fence on a full-count pitch to move the lead to 28-9. MSUB closed the scoring with four runs in the home half to provide the final margin of 28-13 in favor of WOU.
WOU held a 22-16 edge in hits with Berman and Arcano had four hits apiece. Zellner added three hits, while Jones, Forrest, Derek Maiben, Jacob Maiben and Herzog all added two hits apiece. On the mound, Nick Parr picked up his third win (3-0) of the season going the first six innings and allowing five earned runs. He also recorded eight strikeouts. David Gibons and Dylan Myers worked the final three innings.
Hayden Foltz led MSUB with four hits, while Tanner Cantwell and Andrew Schleusner drove in four runs apiece. On the mound, Brooks Zimmer went the first 1.1 innings to end up with the loss (0-3) after allowing seven earned runs. Cantwell, Diego Hernandez and Sterling Lay went the rest of the way.
While offense was certainly the story this weekend, a strong pitching performance by Seth Kuykendall helped highlight the series finale win. Kuykendall picked up his second (2-0) win of the season going all seven innings for the complete game win, allowing just one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
As it turned out, the four runs WOU scored in the second would be all they would need. Berman opened the frame with a single and after back-to-back walks to Herzog and Forrest, Zellner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Arcano then kept his bat hot connecting on a three-run homer on a 2-0 pitch that sailed over the right field fence for a 4-0 lead.
In the third, Jacob Maiben, McCord and Berman hit three straight doubles to open the inning and drive in two runs for a 6-0 lead.
In the fifth, WOU got the offense going with two outs. Forrest walked and after Zellner was hit-by-pitch, Arcano tripled to right-center to bring in two runs. Arcano then scored on a wild pitch for a 9-0 lead.
MSUB scored their only run of the game in the fifth. WOU closed the scoring with a run in the seventh. Herzog walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs recorded, Arcano fittingly closed the scoring with a single up the middle to bring in Herzog to finish off the 10-1 victory.
WOU held a 9-4 edge in hits with Arcano tallying three hits. Jacob Maiben and Berman added two hits. Arcano drove in six runs.
Four players tallied a hit for the 'Jackets with Will Riley driving in the only run. On the mound, Blake Tritch went the first three innings to end up with the loss (1-1) allowing six earned runs. Mason Abrath and Ryan Roche worked the final four innings.
WOU will remain on the road this coming week as they will play at Saint Martin's on Thursday and Friday for a four-game set beginning at 1 p.m. each day.
