Baseball Rolls to Thursday Sweep at Saints to Push Winning Streak to Six Games

LACEY, Wash. -- Backed by 20 runs and a pair of solid pitching performances, the Western Oregon University baseball team cruised to a sweep of Saint Martin's by scores of 8-4 and 12-1 on Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

In the first game, Saint Martin's (7-27, 3-23 GNAC) came out swinging scoring three runs in the opening inning. In the third inning, Ryan Santa Cruz got things going for WOU (18-6, 17-5 GNAC) with a double to start the frame. Following two straight outs, Derek Maiben reached on a fielding error allowing Santa Cruz to score. Derek Maiben then stole second and came home on a double to left field by his twin brother Jacob Maiben to make it a 3-2 lead for Saint Martin's.

The Saints answered with a run in the home half to go back ahead 4-2. WOU tied the game in the fourth. Justyn Herzog walked with one out and Tyler Brandenburg followed with a walk. Santa Cruz was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Blayze Arcano kept his hot bat going with a single through the left side to bring in two runs and tie the game at four.

The Wolves took the lead for good in the fifth. Derek Maiben opened the inning with a double off the first pitch to left. After advancing to third on a fly out, he would score on a sacrifice fly to right by Connor McCord. Josh Berman walked and then after a single by Herzog, Brandenburg drove another run in with a single through the left side to give WOU a 6-4 lead.

In the sixth, WOU closed the scoring with two more runs. Arcano opened the frame with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Derek Maiben was hit-by-pitch and Jacob Maiben singled to left-center to bring in a run. McCord closed the inning with an RBI single to right-center to push the lead to 8-4.

Mike Peterson kept Saint Martin's from scoring the rest of the way and Nathan Bonck closed the door with the final two outs in the ninth to preserve the 8-4 victory.

Saint Martin's held a 14-12 edge in hits with Jacob Maiben leading for the Wolves with three hits. Derek Maiben and Arcano each added two hits apiece. On the mound, Peterson started and went the first 8.1 innings to pick up his sixth win of the season (6-0) allowing four earned runs, while adding two strikeouts. Bonck went the final two-thirds of an inning tallying two strikeouts.

Ryne Oshiro, Aaron Renaud, Mark Steward, Cody Chavis and Griffin Williams all added two hits for the Saints. Reid Little drove in a pair of runs. On the mound, Finnley Butler started and went the first five innings to end up with the loss (1-2) allowing six runs (four earned). Ryan Ancheta went the final four innings allowing two earned runs.

In game two, WOU used a trio of big innings to run away with the victory. The Wolves opened the scoring in the third plating three runs. Jayden Hanna tallied a one-out single to open the frame. Derek Maiben added a single to put runners at the corners and Jacob Maiben then drove in two runs with a single to center. Berman closed the inning with an RBI double to right to give WOU a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Ryan Witt opened the inning with a solo home run to center to make it 4-0.

In the fifth, McCord open the inning with a solo home run to right. Berman followed with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a single by Herzog. Witt ripped a double to left-center to score another run. Anthony Zellner finished the inning with a two-run single to center to push the lead to 8-0.

Jacob Maiben got the sixth inning going with a double and then scored when McCord singled down the right field line for a 9-0 lead.

In the seventh, Zellner walked and Spencer Weston was hit-by-pitch. Following two outs, Jacob Maiben singled to right for an RBI. McCord walked to load the bases for David Gibons who doubled down the left field line to score two runs and move the lead out to 12-0.

Matthew Dunaway kept the Saints off the board over the first six innings, as the Saints scored their only run in the seventh to provide the final margin of 12-1.

WOU outhit SMU 16-5 with Jacob Maiben and Berman tallying three hits apiece. Derek Maiben and McCord added two hits. Jacob Maiben drove in three runs, while McCord, Witt, Gibons and Zellner tallied two RBI apiece. On the mound, Dunaway rolled to his third (3-1) win of the season going the first six innings allowing no runs on four hits, along with two walks and struck out seven. Joe Kinsky went the final inning and allowed one earned run.

Five players had a hit for Saint Martin's, while Hunter Kosmider drove in the only run. On the mound, Justice Yamashita went the first five innings to end up with the loss (1-2) allowing eight earned runs. Derek Alumbaugh, Mason Machart and Logan Caravalho went the final two innings.

WOU and SMU will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader tomorrow (Friday) starting at 1 p.m.
