Gordien, Hurley highlight Wolves at Spokane Invitational

SPOKANE, Washington --- The Western Oregon men's and women's track teams opened their season at the Spokane Invitational on Saturday with a Wolf almost breaking a record in his first attempt of the season.
 
WOU's Dayne Gordien in the shot put on his first attempt threw for 16.16 meters (53 feet, ¼ inch) – good for fifth place at the event and the No. 2 spot in Wolves history, only behind Doyle Kenady's mark of 57-10.5 set in 1972. It also puts him in the GNAC all-time top 10 at the No. 10 spot.
 
Justin Conklin made the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and took seventh place with a time of 8.56 seconds. In the prelims, he finished with a time of 8.51 – 0.02 off his personal best.
 
Jenelle Hurley nearly broke her own school record in the long jump, finishing at 5.52 meters – or 18-1.5, two inches short. She also finished ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.61 meters.
 
Gabe Arce-Torres also had a strong showing, winning his heat in the 200 with a time of 22.48 – 0.24 off of reaching the WOU all-time top 10.
