MONMOUTH, Ore. – Coming off of a strong performance at the Concordia Kickoff Classic, the Western Oregon University softball team is home this Friday for the second time this season when they face Warner Pacific in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the WOU Softball Field.
WOU (5-2) went 3-2 in California this past week picking up wins against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Stanislaus State and San Francisco State. Prior to that trip, the Wolves swept a home doubleheader against Bushnell.
Both Natalie Willoughby and Maddie Mayer were named GNAC Players of the Week for their performances over the seven-game stretch. Mayer and Logan Carlos also landed on the Concordia Kickoff Classic All-Tournament Team.
WOU enters the week hitting .314 with 37 runs scored, 58 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 37 RBI. Opponents are hitting .254 with 30 runs scored, 48 hits, six doubles, two triples, two home runs and 27 RBI.
Maddie Doig started her Wolves' career strong posting a .450 average out of the gate. She also has five runs scored, nine hits, three doubles, a triple and an RBI. Willoughby is right behind with a .444 average, recording seven runs scored, eight hits, a double, three home runs and 10 RBI. Carlos isn't far behind either holding a .440 average with four runs scored, 11 hits, a triple and five RBI. Kate Ronning is hitting .278 with five hits, four runs scored and five RBI. Kirah McGlothan holds a .250 average with five hits, four runs scored and four RBI. Erica Soliz is hitting .833 in six at-bats, adding five RBI. Zoie Recolan is hitting over .400 posting a .429 average with six hits, two runs scored, a double and three RBI. McKenzie Westphal is close to hitting .300 sitting at .286.
In the circle, Mayer put together a week to remember in 17.2 innings pitched, the left-hander allowed just two earned runs. She went 3-0 with a 0.79 ERA and added a save. Mayer has 14 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .167 batting average. Chelsea Smith tossed 12 innings, going 2-0 with a 4.67 ERA. She has 14 strikeouts as well on the season. Jada Young pitched in 5.1 innings over two appearances and a start. Reilly Tidwell logged 7.2 innings in three appearances that included two starts. Nicki Derrick added a save in four innings of work and Soliz also pitched in 1.1 innings. As a staff, WOU has pitched 48 innings, holding a 4.23 ERA and 37 strikeouts.
Warner Pacific will open their 2022 season this week playing WOU. Last year, the Knights went 20-25. Maggie Brauckmiller led the team with a .368 average, adding two home runs and 13 RBI. Payton Hergert tallied a .333 average, slugging seven home runs and 24 RBI. As a team, Warner Pacific hit .243 with 20 home runs and 146 RBI. Opponents hit .327 with 16 home runs and 202 RBI. In the circle, Abby Carlson pitched in 76.2 innings and went 5-7 with a 7.04 ERA. Melia Croydon led the team in innings pitched with 173 and in wins going 12-15, along with a 4.68 ERA. As a staff, the Knights held a 5.73 ERA in 292 innings, tallying 137 strikeouts to 87 walks.
