IRVINE, Calif. – It will be a quick turnaround for the Western Oregon University softball team as after facing Bushnell this Tuesday, the Wolves will now travel to California to play five games in three days this weekend.
WOU (2-0) posted 16 hits on the day, eight in both games and both Natalie Willoughby and Maddie Doig posted four hits apiece. Willoughby had a big game tallying a pair of home runs along with eight RBI. Doig added a double. Logan Carlos posted two hits on the day. In the circle, Maddie Mayer started the first game and went six innings, allowing just one hit to get the win. She added five strikeouts. Nicki Derrick then came on in relief to record the save tossing a scoreless inning. Chelsea Smith then came on in relief in game two allowing no runs in three innings, along with five strikeouts to pick up the victory. Reilly Tidwell started the second game and went the first four innings, allowing two earned runs to get the no decision.
WOU will face Cal State Dominguez Hills first on Friday at 11 a.m. and then will play Cal State East Bay to close out the Friday starting at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Wolves will open with Stanislaus State at 11:45 a.m. and then finish the day against Cal State San Marcos at 7 p.m. WOU will wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a morning contest against San Francisco State at 9 a.m.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will open the tournament with Holy Names before facing WOU. The Toros, out of the CCAA, didn't play last year and went 16-8 during the shortened 2020 season. They played some similar GNAC opponents that year defeating Western Washington (4-3), Concordia (OR) (5-4), Northwest Nazarene (5-1) and Montana State Billings (4-2).
Jessica Lane led Cal State Dominguez Hills with a .368 average, while Chenoa Au hit .333 with three home runs and 20 RBI. Jade Loe and Dafne Bravo tied for the team lead in home runs with four apiece. In the circle, Ashley Wies posted a 2.30 ERA in 61 innings, going 5-3 with 59 strikeouts to just 15 walks. Alyssa Olague added a 2.77 ERA in 73.1 innings, going 9-3 with 62 strikeouts to just 11 walks. Bravo, Wies and Olague are all back for this season.
WOU holds a 7-4 series record against Cal State Dominguez Hills since 2006, winning the past five meetings. The last time the teams played was the 2019 season with WOU taking the 10-4 victory.
The Wolves will close the first day on Friday against Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers will face Western Washington earlier in the day before going against WOU. Being part of the CCAA, Cal State East Bay didn't play last year and went 8-19 during the 2020 season.
The Pioneers played one opponent from the GNAC that year falling to Western Washington (10-0). Sarah Fukushima led the way with a .364 average. Madeline Ramirez hit .323 and Jennifer Palmares added a .304 average. Jeana Gonzales led the team in home runs with two and RBI with 13. In the circle, Abby Greer led Cal State East Bay with a 3.74 ERA, going 5-7 in 88 innings. Anamaria Beard added a 6.25 ERA and a 2-8 record in 52.2 innings. Fukushima, Ramirez, Greer and Beard are all back this season.
Cal State East Bay is 2-0 in the series against WOU since 2014. The last meeting was in 2019 with the Pioneers hanging on for the 3-2 victory. Both meetings in the series have been one-run games.
To start off Saturday, WOU will face Stanislaus State. The Warriors, out of the PacWest, didn't play any games during the 2021 season. They went 10-15 in 2020 facing one GNAC team in Western Washington as they claimed the 4-2 victory. Stanislaus State will play Western Washington and Academy of Art before facing WOU.
During the 2020 season, Kyndra Marzorini led the Warriors with a .281 average. Korie Corral added a .280 average. Joerdan Lovell had a team-high 12 RBI. In the circle, Delaney Pamplin posted a 1.49 ERA in 61 innings, going 5-5. Marzorini also pitched for Stanislaus State holding a 1.89 ERA in 55.2 innings and went 3-6. Marzorini, Corral and Pamplin are all back this season.
Stanislaus State holds an 8-6 series record since 2003 having won the past three meetings. The teams last played in 2019 with the Warriors claiming the 3-1 victory.
WOU will close out Saturday going against Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars out of the CCAA didn't play in 2021. During the 2020 season Cal State San Marcos went 7-12 and played a few teams from the GNAC picking up wins against Western Washington (6-1) and taking a doubleheader from Concordia (OR) (10-0, 7-3). They will play Montana State Billings, Azusa Pacific and Dominican before facing the Wolves.
Gianna Lombardi led Cal State San Marcos with a .356 average. Nikki Andelin added a .343 clip, while Emily Paredez hit .333. Andrea Wood led the offense with five home runs and 22 RBI. In the circle, Jamie Ponce had a 3.88 ERA in 39.2 innings, going 3-6. Kaylie Hoskins added a 4.74 ERA in 31 innings, going 1-2. Zoe Ballen was tied for the team lead in wins with three. Lombardi, Andelin and Ponce are back this season.
This will be the first meeting between the teams.
WOU will close the tournament on Sunday morning against San Francisco State. The Gators out of the CCAA didn't play in 2021 and went 13-14 during the 2020 season. WOU faced San Francisco State to open the 2020 season with the Gators taking the 11-1 win. SFSU also played Central Washington, loss (8-7), and Simon Fraser, loss (12-6) from the GNAC that year.
Brylynn Vallejos led the Gators in 2020 with a .424 average, along with two home runs and 13 RBI. Michelle Castro added a .390 average with two home runs and 18 RBI. Katie Rohrer hit .310 with four home runs and 14 RBI. Tianna Jacques added a .308 average with two home runs and 11 RBI and Lehua DeLeon also hit over .300 finishing at .301. In the circle, Emily Mitchell held a 4.22 ERA in 61.1 innings to go 5-4. Natalie Minteer added a 4.51 ERA in 104 innings, going 7-9. Vallejos and DeLeon are back this season.
San Francisco State holds a 11-7 series record since 2002. The teams split the past four meetings as WOU won the 2019 meeting by a 1-0 score.
