Softball Continues Homestand Against Saint Martin’s This Weekend

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Coming off of a Sunday sweep, the Western Oregon University softball team will look to carry that momentum into their four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series with Saint Martin's this Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders beginning each day at noon at the WOU Softball Field.

WOU (15-14, 2-6 GNAC) picked up a marathon 4-3 win in extra innings and then cruised to the 11-4 win on Sunday to sweep the doubleheader and split a four-game set with Montana State Billings.

Zoie Recolan hit .500 in the four games, collecting three doubles, a home run and four RBI. Logan Carlos added a .467 average with a double, a triple, two home runs and four RBI. Kirah McGlothan tallied a .333 average with a home run and two RBI. Bella Valdes hit .308 with two RBI. Natalie Willoughby hit .294 with three doubles, a home run and six RBI. Erica Soliz added four RBI. In the circle, Nicki Derrick and Reilly Tidwell collected the wins. Derrick tossed five shutout innings in relief in the series finale, coming away with three strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Tidwell tossed all 11 innings of the 4-3 win, allowing just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts.

Carlos is hitting .423 on the season with 44 hits, 25 runs, seven doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 26 RBI. Carlos is near the top in the GNAC in multiple categories including second in batting average, seventh in the nation and leading the GNAC in hits, 37th nationally and second in the GNAC in home runs, third in the GNAC in home runs per game, 78th nationally and third in the GNAC in RBI, 60th nationally and third in the GNAC in slugging percentage (.788), sixth nationally and leading the GNAC in total bases (82), eighth in the nation and leading the GNAC in triples (5) and 22nd nationally and leading the GNAC in triples per game.

Recolan is hitting .415 on the season with 34 hits, 13 runs, nine doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 RBI. Recolan is third in the GNAC in batting average, 46th nationally and third in the GNAC in doubles, seventh in the GNAC in doubles per game and 94th nationally and third in the GNAC in hits.

Willoughy is hitting .356 with 26 hits, 25 runs, six doubles, 10 home runs and 28 RBI. Willoughby ranks seventh in the nation and leading the GNAC in home runs, eighth in the nation and first in the GNAC in home runs per game, 55th nationally and leading the GNAC in RBI, 55th nationally and second in the GNAC in RBI per game, 82nd nationally and fourth in the GNAC in runs per game, 26th nationally and leading the GNAC in slugging percentage (.849) and 58th nationally and second in the GNAC in total bases (62).

McGlothan is hitting .341 with 29 hits, 20 runs, six doubles, three home runs and 21 RBI. McGlothan ranks sixth in the GNAC in hits, fifth in runs scored, and seventh in RBI.

Maddie Doig holds a .329 average with 27 hits, 16 runs, five doubles, a triple, two home runs and six RBI. Sophie Franklin is hitting .290 with 18 hits, 12 runs, three doubles, a triple and 12 RBI. Kate Ronning is not far behind hitting .284 with 23 hits, 16 runs, four doubles and 11 RBI. Soliz is hitting .395 in 43 at-bats, tallying 17 hits, four doubles and 12 RBI.

In the circle, Tidwell leads the team with a 3.02 ERA in 53.1 innings, going 5-3 with 37 strikeouts. Maddie Mayer is 4-5 in 53.1 innings, holding a 3.54 ERA with 39 strikeouts. She also has a save on the season. Chelsea Smith leads the team in wins with seven (7-3), posting a 4.30 ERA in 53.2 innings and has 59 strikeouts. Derrick is 1-1 on the season in 15.1 innings and holds a 5.02 ERA. Jada Young has pitched in 10 innings and Soliz has pitched in 2.2 innings and has a save on the season.

Smith is third in the GNAC with five complete games, Mayer is fifth in the GNAC with four complete games and Tidwell is 10th in the GNAC with three complete games. Tidwell is seventh in the GNAC in games started with nine and Mayer is 10th in the GNAC with eight games started. Mayer is seventh in the GNAC in pitching appearances with 13. Smith is 81st nationally and third in the GNAC in strikeouts per seven innings (7.7) and is sixth in the GNAC in WHIP (1.43). Smith is second in the GNAC in wins, sixth in innings pitched, third in strikeouts, tied for third in shutouts (1) and fourth in opponent batting average (.236). Mayer is eighth in innings pitched, seventh in strikeouts, and tied for third in shutouts (1). Tidwell is tied for eighth in innings pitched, tied for eighth in strikeouts, tied for third in shutouts (1) and fifth in opponent batting average (.240).

WOU ranks in the top-75 nationally and in the top-three in the GNAC in multiple categories including 55th nationally and second in the GNAC in batting average (.311), 33rd nationally in doubles (45), 65th nationally in doubles per game (1.55), second in the GNAC in fielding percentage (.962), 38th nationally and first in the GNAC in hit-by-pitch (19), 31st nationally and leading the GNAC in hits (245), 39th nationally and second in the GNAC in home runs (23), second in the GNAC in home runs per game (0.79), 30th nationally and second in the GNAC in on-base percentage (.398), 49th nationally and third in the GNAC in slugging percentage (.479), third in the GNAC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.46), 40th nationally and leading the GNAC in total runs (161), 31st nationally and leading the GNAC in total sacrifice bunts (21), 32nd nationally and second in the GNAC in sacrifice flies (9), 32nd nationally and leading the GNAC in triples (9), 48th nationally and leading the GNAC in triples per game (0.31), third in the GNAC in win-loss percentage (.517) and 20th nationally and second in the GNAC in walks (101).

Saint Martin's enters the week on a 10-game winning streak and are 14-8 overall and 4-0 in GNAC play. The Saints started the winning streak with two wins over Northwest (WA), four over Bushnell and then swept Simon Fraser to open conference play this past weekend.

WOU and Saint Martin's played a non-conference doubleheader in Lacey back on Mar. 5 with the teams splitting the two games. The Saints won the first game by a score of 3-0 and then WOU roared back with a dominating 10-0 win in six innings.

Destiny Conerly leads the team with a .407 average, coming away with 22 hits, 17 runs, four home runs and 16 RBI. Devyn Connolly is hitting .393 with 22 hits, 11 runs, seven doubles, a triple, two home runs and 21 RBI. Malia Pinder is hitting .391 with 27 hits, 13 runs, six doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI. Natalie Zender (.319) and Shay Lopes (.305) are also hitting over .300 of the regulars in the lineup.

In the circle, Chloe Leverington is 4-0 on the season with a 2.39 ERA in 44 innings. She has 40 strikeouts to just five walks. Abby Runyon holds a 3.63 ERA in 44.1 innings and is 5-4 on the season. Tia Ridings is 3-4 in 34 innings, posting a 4.53 ERA. Kylie Parsons has the other win on the staff.

WOU has gone 31-10 at home against the Saints since 2002 and have won the past four meetings played in Monmouth, including last year's meeting in the GNAC Championships (7-6).
