Baseball Returns To Action This Week In GNAC Play Hosting Saint Martin’s

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Following a break in the schedule last weekend, the Western Oregon University baseball team will get set to host Saint Martin's this weekend in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at the WOU Baseball Field. Dates for the series were moved up a day with the teams playing doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. each day.

WOU enters the week 15-11 overall and 7-5 in GNAC play. The Wolves played just one game last week on Tuesday, Mar. 22 taking the 13-4 home win over Bushnell. Dominic Miller picked up the win on the mound and Spencer Weston added a 3-5 game with four RBI. 

Derek Maiben leads the way with a .358 average, tallying 34 hits, 23 runs, two doubles, a triple, a home run and 17 RBI. He also has 14 stolen bases. Jacob Maiben is hitting .345 with 29 hits, 18 runs, two doubles, a triple, nine RBI and 10 stolen bases. Jackson Holstad holds a .289 average with 26 hits, 10 runs, four doubles, a triple, 16 RBI and eight stolen bases. Anthony Zellner holds a .276 average with 21 hits, 10 runs, six doubles, a home run and 13 RBI. Sebastian Morales is hitting .323 with 10 hits and three doubles, along with a pair of RBI. Darian Noll is hitting .300 in 10 at-bats and John Stark adds three home runs and 11 RBI.

Sebasten Boivin holds a 2.25 ERA in 24 innings, going 2-1 with 17 strikeouts. Arturo Alvarez is 3-0 on the season with a 2.27 ERA in 31.2 innings with 16 strikeouts and seven walks. Matthew Dunaway holds a 2.60 ERA in 17.1 innings with 32 strikeouts. Mike Peterson also is under 3.00 ERA on the season at 2.86 in 22 innings with 20 strikeouts. Parker Johnson has a 3.22 ERA in 22.1 innings, going 4-2 with 21 strikeouts. Curran Mitzel made his pitching debut last time out tossing two scoreless innings. Seth Kuykendall has two wins and two saves. Bryce Bond, Miller, Joe Kinsky and Michael Moore all have a win this season on the mound. Chris Hardin and Moore also have two saves on the season and Boivin adds a save as well.

Alvarez ranks first in the GNAC and 55th nationally in ERA, second in the GNAC in hits per nine innings, first in the GNAC and 71st nationally in WHIP and second in the GNAC and 96th nationally in walks allowed per nine innings. Kuykendall, Moore and Hardin are tied for third in the GNAC and tied for 95th nationally in saves. Derek Maiben leads the GNAC and ranks 41st nationally in stolen bases, Jacob Maiben is second in the GNAC and Holstad is third. Derek Maiben ranks first in the GNAC and 55th nationally in stolen bases per game, while Jacob Maiben ranks second in the GNAC. Derek Maiben is first in the GNAC and 15th nationally in toughest to strikeout, while Jacob Maiben ranks second in the GNAC and 59th nationally in the same category. Johnson is second in the GNAC and 79th nationally in victories.

Saint Martin's is 9-20 overall and 4-8 in GNAC play, going 7-17 away from Lacey this season. This past weekend the Saints split a four-game series at Central Washington winning games two and three.

Aaron Renaud is hitting .293 with 27 hits, 19 runs, five doubles, six home runs and 13 RBI. Mark Steward holds a .279 average with 19 hits and three RBI. Reid Little is hitting .276 with a home run and 18 RBI. On the mound, Ryan Driscoll holds a 1.53 with a 1-0 record in 17.2 innings and 18 strikeouts. Justice Yamashita is 3-3 on the season in 36 innings, holding a 2.75 ERA. Finnley Butler has made the most starts on the team with seven, going 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA in 30.2 innings.

Western Oregon is 136-28 in the series against Saint Martin's since 2002, going 63-11 in Monmouth during that time. The Wolves are 9-1 over the last 10 meetings and have won nine straight.
