Softball Returns To Action This Week In Idaho In GNAC Play At Nighthawks

NAMPA, Idaho – Having last competed in California at the Tournament of Champions on Apr. 3, the Western Oregon University softball team returns to the diamond this week traveling to Idaho to face Northwest Nazarene in a four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and on Saturday at 11 a.m., both start times are Pacific.

WOU (19-19, 4-8 GNAC) went 2-3 in the Tournament of Champions picking up wins against Dominican (CA) and Academy of Art.

Logan Carlos enters the week hitting .394 with 52 hits, 29 runs, seven doubles, five triples, eight home runs and 30 RBI. She leads the team in average, hits, triples and RBI, while tying for the lead in walks. Natalie Willoughby has a .380 average, posting 38 hits, 30 runs, 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 29 RBI and 14 walks. She leads the team in home runs, runs scored and is tied for the team lead in doubles. Zoie Recolan is hitting .352 with 38 hits, 14 runs, 10 doubles, a triple, a home run and 15 RBI, along with 14 walks. She is tied for the team lead in doubles. Sophie Franklin is hitting .314 with 27 hits, 16 runs, six doubles, two triples and 15 RBI. Kirah McGlothan holds a .308 average with 33 hits, 22 runs, eight doubles, three home runs and 25 RBI. Other top averages include Maddie Doig hitting .292 with two home runs, Kate Ronning is hitting .276 with 11 RBI and Erica Soliz is hitting .367 with 14 RBI.

In the circle, Chelsea Smith leads the team with nine wins in 77.2 innings, holding a 3.52 ERA and has 85 strikeouts. She also has seven complete games. Maddie Mayer leads the team with a 3.18 ERA in 81.1 innings, coming away with six wins, a save and eight complete games, along with 59 strikeouts. Reilly Tidwell has three wins on the season in 58.2 innings, holding a 3.58 ERA, along with 42 strikeouts and three complete games. Nicki Derrick has a win and a save in 19 innings, Jada Young has thrown 10 innings and Soliz has 2.2 innings in the circle this year.

Mayer is third in the GNAC and Smith is fifth in the GNAC in complete games. Mayer is ninth in the GNAC in games started (12). Smith also ranks third in the GNAC in hits allowed per seven innings (5.95), second in the GNAC and 69th nationally in strikeouts per seven innings (7.7) and fifth in the GNAC in WHIP (1.34). Carlos is first in the GNAC and 37th nationally in hits, third in the GNAC and 83rd nationally in home runs, third in the GNAC in home runs per game (0.21), second in the GNAC and 95th nationally in slugging percentage (.705), first in the GNAC and 22nd nationally in total bases (93), first in the GNAC and 12th nationally in triples and first in the GNAC and 37th nationally in triples per game (0.13). Willoughby leads the GNAC and is 36th nationally in home runs, leads the GNAC and is 37th nationally in home runs per game (0.29), leads the GNAC and is 38th nationally in slugging percentage (.780) and second in the GNAC and 92nd nationally in total bases (78). Bella Valdes ranks sixth in the GNAC in walks per game (0.52).

Northwest Nazarene is 21-15 overall and 9-3 in the GNAC. The Nighthawks were just named the GNAC Team of the Week after piling up 44 runs in a four-game sweep at Montana State Billings. NNU is 6-2 at home on the season.

Sidney Booth continues to be a strong two-way star for the Nighthawks leading the team with a .422 average, tallying 46 hits, 27 runs, 12 doubles, six home runs and 33 RBI. In the circle, she leads the way with a 2.20 ERA in 124 innings, going 10-8 with a save, along with 130 strikeouts.

Ivy Hommel is hitting .400 with 42 hits, 41 runs, six doubles, three triples, six home runs and 25 RBI. Charlotte Forniss is another two-way star for NNU hitting .333 with 25 hits, seven doubles, three home runs and 21. In the circle, she has a 2.56 ERA in 38.1 innings, tallying three wins and three complete games. Abigail Gagnon rounds out the group hitting .300 at .304 with 31 hits, 16 runs, eight doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI. Maia McNicoll has provided the power with 10 home runs and 41 RBI.

In addition, toe Booth and Forniss in the circle, Gina Skinner and Tori Hensley have seen time. Skinner has pitched in 29.2 innings, going 3-2 with a save and Hensley has five wins in 46.2 innings.

WOU has gone 69-31 in the series against NNU since 2002 and are 38-16 in Idaho during that time. Last year the teams played each other 10 times with NNU going 6-4. WOU won the first meeting last year that was Tidwell's no-hitter in Nampa and then NNU came back to win the final three games. During the meetings in Monmouth, WOU won the first three games before the Nighthawks won the finale. The teams played twice in the GNAC Championships with WOU nearly winning the first meeting, before the Nighthawks won that game and then the second meeting.
