Wolves volleyball splits two matches during opening day at Magic Island Classic

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Western Oregon volleyball team opened the season by splitting a pair of matches Friday on the opening day of the Magic Island Classic at the Honolulu Convention Center.

The Wolves opened the event by being swept by San Francisco State 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-16) before bouncing back in the evening with a sweep of Hawaii Pacific 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-22) - the first win for head coach Kaiao Nahale-a.

In the win over HPU, WOU (1-1) led the opening set by a wide margin for much of it and held off a late run by the Sharks (0-4) thanks to a kill by Bailee Hartsook that made it 24-22 and an attack error by HPU for game point.

In the second game, WOU jumped out to a 15-5 lead after a Chloe Asciutto ace and never looked back - winning 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set went back and forth and saw WOU holding a 22-21 lead before an HPU error and a pair of kills by Hartsook put the game and match away for the Wolves.

Hartsook paced WOU with 12 kills while Ella Nordquist added eight. Emily West had 10 assists while Laney O'Neil added nine, West had a team-high three aces while Tayler Lamb added two, Delaney Smith had five blocks to lead Western while Ally Henry had a team-high 10 digs.

In the loss to SFSU, Hartsook had six kills to lead the team while Smith and Bella MacLellan had five apiece. West finished with 12 assists and Sophie Matlock had a team-high 15 digs.

The Wolves take on Stanislaus State 1 p.m. Saturday before wrapping up action in Hawaii against Hawaii HIlo at 5 p.m. Saturday.
