MCMINNVILLE, Ore. --- A pair of 10,000 runners highlighted a soggy outdoor opening weekend for the Western Oregon track and field teams in which one of the Wolves' meets was canceled.
Bailey Smith and Ali Clifton each ran all-time top-10 times in the 10K on Friday night at the Erik Anderson Memorial Ice Breaker hosted by Linfield while the Wolves' other meet set for Saturday - the Willamette Opener - was canceled due to inclement weather.
Smith, a senior, ran the second-fastest time in Wolves history in the 10K at 30 minutes, 16.03 seconds as he took fifth place - only behind a trio of independent runners and just behind Northwest Nazarene's Brody Kemble. Smith's time, an NCAA provisional mark, only ranks behind Chris Reed's time of 29:44.77 set in 2011.
On the women's side, Ali Clifton ran the 10
th-fastest time in WOU history with a time of 39:17.49 – shaving 78 seconds off of her PR.
While the weather dampened times and entries, the Wolves did win a pair of events in McMinnville with Riley Smith winning the 800 (2:22.14) and Kaylee Wright won the javelin.
The Wolves next compete at the LCC Open next Saturday.
