Wolves take two from MSU Billings on Saturday in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team broke its streak of five consecutive split doubleheader by taking two from Montana State Billings, 5-1 and 6-4, Saturday at WOU Baseball Field.

The Wolves (15-14 overall, 9-7 GNAC) got stellar pitching in game one as Arturo Alvarez and Bryce Bond combined for a two-hitter. Alvarez went 6.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Bond picked up the save - getting WOU out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh and tossed 2.1 perfect innings - pick up two strikeouts.

WOU got all it would need against the Yellowjackets (11-23, 5-11) in the third inning as Collin Irwin hit an RBI single to left and eventually scored on a MSUB error to make it 2-0. The Wolves added three more in the eighth for insurance on a Randy Stultz RBI single, a double steal that scored Stultz and an Emiliano Alarcon RBI single to left.

Irwin finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Alarcon was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

In game two, the Wolves scored three in the first to overcome a run in the top of the first by MSUB - getting an RBI double from Stultz, an RBI single by Danny Alvarado and a John Oleson RBI single to right to make it 3-1. The Wolves eventually built a 6-2 heading into the seventh and final inning thanks to two more RBI singles from Oleson and an RBI double from Cortese.

Oleson finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, Stultz was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs, Alvarado was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and Curran Mitzel was 2-for-4 with a run.

Jacob Memmott picked up the win, going five innings and giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
