BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- The Western Oregon track and field teams walked away with a pair of second-place finishes from
Macy Clemens and
Gabe Burchfield at the GNAC Combined Events Championships on Tuesday at Civic Stadium.
Clemens put up the 10th-best heptathlon performance in WOU history with 4,428 points - finishing only behind Vivien Liessfeld of Alaska Anchorage (4,639). While Clemns didn't finish first in any event - she did finish between third and fifth in six of the seven events in the 12-person field and that consistency earned her second. She took third in the high jump (5-1.75), long jump (17-2) and the javelin (102-6).
The second-place finish at GNACs for Clemens is the second time since 2009Â a WOU athlete has finished that high (
Jenelle Hurley, 2021). WOU's last heptathlon champion was Monica Smith in 2005.
Teammate
Amity Deters took fifth place with 4,294 points (taking second in the high jump and javelin) while
Sadie Wendring took 10th with 3,523 points.
On the men's side, Burchfield took second with 6,249 points - finishing only behind Drew Klein of Central Washington (6,709). Burchfield, a junior, took first in the high jump (6-0.5) and 110 hurdles (15.28), took second in the long jump (21-2.5) and pole vault (13-2.5) and third in the 1,500 (4:57.78) and discus (113-4).
His second-place finish is the fourth time a WOU athlete has taken second since the Wolves' last decathlon champion - Andy Loscutoff in 2010.
Teammates
JJ Walker (5,453) and
Caleb Ness (5,328) took sixth and seventh in the event.
The Wolves track and field teams take part in their final weekend of action before the GNAC Outdoor Championships this week at the Oregon Twilight (Friday), Portland Twilight (Saturday) and Linfield Open (Saturday).
