SALEM, Ore. - The Western Oregon University track and field team returned to action at the John Knight Twilight meet at the Charles Bowles Track Wednesday, May 6 after a near two-week competition layoff.
Jason Slowey highlighted the Wolves' performance as he earned an NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the discus with a toss of 166-4 (50.69m). Slowey's mark moved him to the top of the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference performance list and into fifth place in GNAC history. His toss also places him fifth in Western Oregon school history.
The women's 4x400m relay team earned its season best time in the event as it posted a 3:59.15 to win the event at the John Knight Twilight. This time was over five second better than their previous season best time of 4:05.58.
"The women's 4x400m relay was my favorite race of the meet because it symbolized our team getting back together," Western Oregon head coach
Mike Johnson explained.
Chris Reed and
Nik Karr moved into second and third place in school history in the 10,000m with times of 31:15.37 and 31:28.90, respectively. Karr was able to improve on his career-best time of 32:08.03 to move from 10th to third in school history. Reed's time was also a personal-best and was the fastest time for a Western Oregon student-athlete in the event since 1989.
Andy Loscutoff recorded a 54.43 in the men's 400m hurdles to move into second place on the 2009 GNAC performance list.
Ashtin Mott won the men's 200m and 400m races with times of 22.36 and 49.06, respectively. His time in the 200m moved him into fourth on the GNAC performance list and he already owns the top time in the conference in the 400m this season (48.84).
Jacque Helbling moved into third place in the GNAC in the long jump with a leap of 18-0.25 (5.49m) passing her previous season-best of 17-4.25 (5.29m). It also moves her into sixth place in GNAC history as she pasted her career-best mark of 17-9.75 (5.43m).
Brandon Snook moved into fourth place on the 2009 GNAC list in the men's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:30.85 while
Dan Sprinkle secured his seventh place mark with a season-best time of 9:51.56.
Other Wolves setting season-best included
Kody Reavis in the men's javelin (173-1/52.76m), Caitlyn Morris in the women's javelin (124-1/37.82m),
Robert Barrett in the shot put (47-5/14.45m), Alex Furrow in the men's 100m (11.56),
Erica Zambon in the women's 800m (2:16.88) and Erica Snawder in the women's 1500m (4:54.29).
"We did things at this meet to make it enjoyable for our student-athletes," continued Johnson. "We were able to move some people around but still prepare for our upcoming meets."
The Wolves will have student-athletes in action Saturday, May 9 at the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, Ore., and at the Shannon-Foreman Invitational in Seattle.
