WOU takes down Regis in four

Box Score DENVER - The Western Oregon University volleyball team dominated at the net as it outblocked Regis University 11 to five and went on to win the match in four sets, 15-25, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-20, in the third place match of the Bronze pool at the Premier Challenge, Saturday, Sept. 5.

The loss helped the Wolves avoid a winless tournament as it moved to 2-6 on the season while dropping the Rangers to 2-6.

Danielle Reese led the Wolves offensive attack as she hammered down 12 kills on 23 attempts with just four errors for a .348 hitting percentage. Danielle English had a season-high 27 digs to lead the defense while Amy Herron matched a season-best with 41 assists.

The Wolves also won the hitting battle for the first time this weekend as it posted .245 kill percentage to the Rangers' .155. WOU allowed RU to hit .286 in the first set but stepped up the defense thereafter to hold them to marks of .122, .097 and .098 in the final three sets.

After falling by 10 in the first set, the Wolves responded in the second. After a kill by Regis tied the set at 14-14, WOU used a five point outburst to seize a 19-14 lead which it did not relinquish en route to the 25-19 set win.

In the third set, the Wolves would once again use an extended run to win the set. Tied at seven, WOU took 12 of the next 13 points to go up 19-8 and cruise to the 25-16 set win.

The fourth set was much tighter as Regis closed to within two points at 21-19 but a kill by Amy Herron and two Rangers' attacking errors took away them momentum as WOU closed out with the 25-20 set win and took the match 3-1.

The Western Oregon volleyball team will now travel to Bellingham, Wash., Sept. 11-12 for the Western Washington Tournament. The Wolves will open with Norte Dame de Namur, Friday (Sept. 11) at 9:00 a.m.
