SALEM, Ore. – The Western Oregon men's basketball team defended their Capital City Classic championship as they went on to beat Montana Tech, 73-57, on Saturday, Nov. 26th.
James Gehring led the way for the Wolves (5-1) as he scored a career-high 17 points with six rebounds. He was also named to the all-tournament team.
Blair Wheadon chipped in with 16 points, while also being named the tournament MVP; and
Kyle Long put in 14 points as well.
Jamaal Veal and
Kolton Nelson led the team with seven rebounds each.
Western Oregon came out firing as it only took them three minutes into the first half to take a three-point lead off of Long's 3-point shot. From there the Wolves did not look back as Wheadon was red hot putting in all four of his first half shots from the 3-point line. At the half WOU had a 36-27 point lead.
WOU would put the game into their hands as they would go up by as much as 20 points with eight minutes to go in the second half after a
Jordan Freelander layup.
The Wolves continue their winning ways as this was their fifth straight win and now become the two-time defending champions of the Capital City Classic championship trophy.
Adam Greger led the way for Montana Tech as he scored 11 points.
The Wolves will head out on the road to begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play as they journey to Central Washington on Dec. 1st. Tip off at 7:00 p.m.
