MANTAKO, Minn. -
Ashley Potter capped a fantastic senior season in indoor track & field by registering record breaking performance in the triple jump en route to placing second at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Mar. 10.
The All-American posted a leap of 40-8.25 (12.40m) on her second attempt to shatter her own school record by 13.25 inches. The record breaking distance also moved the senior from Springfield, Ore. (Thurston HS) to the top of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference record books, as she is the only female in the history of the league to eclipse the 40 foot mark.
Her second place finish is the best finish ever for a Western Oregon student-athlete at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She went 39-3.75 (12.00m) on her first jump but then recorded her record breaking leap of 40-8.25 (12.40m) on her next attempt. Amanda Oueraogo of Abilene Christian won the event with a mark of 42-1.5 (12.84m). Potter was 6.25 inches in front of the third place mark.
This season Potter set both the GNAC and school records in the triple jump, won the triple jump at the GNAC Championships, set the Western Oregon long jump record and briefly held the school's 60m hurdles record.
Ryan Hansen competed in the finals of the men's 800m but he did not place.
