Defense, VonAppen lead WOU to win at Azusa

Wolves cruise to 20-7 win over Azusa Pacific.

AZUSA, Calif. - Cody VonAppen had 260 total yards of offense and the Western Oregon football team held Azusa Pacific to just one score as the Wolves rolled to a 20-7 victory in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday. With the win, Western Oregon improved to 2-3 overall, 2-2 in league play, as APU fell to 0-5 overall, 0-4 in conference action.

The defense had a lead to work with all game as VonAppen marched the Wolves down the field on the opening possession of the game. VonAppen capped off the four-play, 53-yard drive with a 35-yard scoring strike on a slant over the middle to Tyrell Williams to put WOU in front 7-0.

The Wolves defense would then go to work. They held APU to just 82 total yards in the first half and forced the Cougars into two fumbles and seven three-and-outs.

After the Wolves defense forced APU's second turnover of the game, VonAppen would take advantage to extend lead to 14-0. On the second play of the drive, VonAppen tucked the ball on a run and took it 36 yards up the field for the score. He also had a run of 13 yards on the drive.

Western Oregon would take that 14-point lead into the half after the Wolves' defense forced three-and-outs on the next three Cougar drives. 

Western Oregon would continue to control momentum in the second half as it extended its lead to 20 points on field goals of 37 and 23 yards by senior Kelly Morgan.

Kraig Akins led the dominant effort for the Wolves on the line on both sides of the ball. He had 2.5 tackles for loss and nine total tackles as the Wolves held APU to just 53 rushing yards on 30 carries. Bryce Peila, Zach Coleman and Michael Akins added six tackles apiece. The Wolves' defense held the Cougars to 0-for-15 on third-down conversions.

Meanwhile, the Wolves put up 188 yards on the ground, led by the 127-yard effort from VonAppen.

WOU will return to action when it travels to No. 10 Humboldt State for a GNAC showdown with the Lumberjacks on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 6:00 p.m.
