MONMOUTH, Ore. – Trailing second-place by 24 points heading into the final event, Western Oregon track & field decathlete
Eric Gaines netted 706 points in the 1500-meters as he overcame the deficit and finished in second at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi Championships at McArthur Field on Tuesday.
Gaines finished the decathlon with a personal record total of 6057 as he leapt Andrew Venema of Central Washington in the final event of the day.
Cody Thomas of Alaska Anchorage won the men's title with a total of 6392.
On the women's side, Ali Worthen of Seattle Pacific broke her own meet record in winning the GNAC heptathlon title with a total of 5,390 points.
The top five women finishers all posted NCAA qualifying scores including Katy Gross of Seattle Pacific (4,992), Haleigh Lloyd of UAA (4,618) and Tayler Fettig of Central Washington (4,438).
The multis are the first event of the GNAC Track and Field Championships. The remainder of the meet will be contested May 9-10 at McArthur Field in Monmouth.
