FULL RESULTSPHOTO GALLERYMONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon University track and field student-athletes,
Tyrell Williams and
Rebecca Laible, won their respective event titles at the 2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday at McArthur Field.
Williams cruised to the 200-meter conference title with a time of 21.32. His finish matched the GNAC Championship record set last year by Rimar Christie of Northwest Nazarene. It also set a new McArthur Field record, breaking Central Washington's Anthony Wright's four-year-old record. Western Washington's Alex Donigian placed second Saturday at 21.64. Williams' top time of the season was 21.19, which was a provisional-qualifying mark for the NCAA Div. II National Championships and is 19th in the nation.
Earlier in the day, Williams scored six team points for the WOU men with a third place finish in the 100 meters. The junior crossed the line at 10.74, matching the 10th best time WOU history. Christie won the event with a time of 10.64.
Jeff Howard scored a point for the Wolves' men with an eighth place finish at 11.26.
Laible claimed the women's triple jump crown with a top mark of 37-10 (11.53 meters). The junior's fourth attempt was her best. She placed second at the conference championships last season. Laible entered this year's meet as the top seed. It was the third time out of the last four years a Wolf has won the women's triple jump.
Ashley Potter claimed the 2012 and 2011 GNAC titles for WOU.
Madison McClung had a pair of second place finishes Saturday. The senior completed an outstanding career at WOU with two eight-point scores in the 100 and 200 meters. She finished at 12.16 in the 100 and 24.78 in the 200. She owns the school's 100-meter record at 12.01, and is second in WOU history in the 200.
In the women's javelin,
Seabre Church placed second with a top throw of 154-10.5 (47.20m). The senior, who has already hit an automatic-qualifying mark for the NCAA Div. II National Championships, scored eight team points for the WOU women. Western Washington's Katie Reichert won with a throw of 173-7.75 (52.92m).
After an outstanding preliminary performance,
Sam Naffziger had the top Western Oregon finish in the men's 800 meters. The sophomore raced to a 1:54.07 fourth-place finish.
Josh Hanna and
Ryan Hansen followed in fifth and seventh. Hansen also scored five team points with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:55.37.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles,
Kody Rhodes tallied eight team points with a second place finish. The senior crossed the line at 14.85.
Brett Campbell placed fourth with a time of 15.35. Rhodes also had a third place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The senior scored six team points with a time of 53.50.
After combined for three team points Friday,
Kyle Lane and
Matson Hardie totaled 12 more on Day 2 in the men's triple jump. Lane had a second place finish at 46-5.5 (14.16m), while Hardie came in fifth with a best leap of 45-9.75 (13.96m).
Carraig Colahan placed third in the men's hammer. The junior's last throw of the day was his best at 163-0.5 (49.69m).
Shane Brooks and
Justin Larson came in fourth and fifth in the men's javelin.
Rochelle Pappel and
Audrey Hellesto had fourth-place finishes in the women's 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Pappel finished the 100 hurdles at 14.83, and Hellesto crossed the 400 hurdle line at 1:03.57.
Aaron Whitaker completed his freshman season with a sixth place finish in the 400 meters. His time of 49.30 scored three points for WOU.
The WOU men's relay teams totaled 11 points. In the 4x100-meter relay, the Wolves' quartet of
John Schifferer, Williams,
Bryce Leedham, and Whitaker, placed third with a time of 42.00. Later, the 4x400-meter team came in fourth at 3:17.11. Whitaker, Hansen, Rhodes, and Williams scored five points for Western Oregon.
In the women's 800 meters,
Bailey Beeson scored two points with a seventh place finish at 2:14.75.
Emmi Collier placed seventh in the women's hammer with a top mark of 146-7.75 (44.69m).
For the second straight season, the Wolves' men placed third as a team. Western Oregon totaled 113 points. On the women's side, WOU finished seventh with 63 points.
Western Washington won its third straight men's team title and its fifth overall. The Vikings outpointed Alaska Anchorage 186-158 to claim the title.
The Seawolves' Cody Thomas, who won the decathlon last week, was selected the Most Outstanding Performer. He finished the meet with 22 points also earning fifth-place finishes in the long jump and high jump and a sixth in the 100.
Thomas was one of 19 different athletes to win an individual event, marking the first time in meet history at least one athlete failed to win two events.
On the women's side, Alaska Anchorage edged Northwest Nazarene and Western Washington by just four team points and the Vikings' Katelyn Steen was selected the Outstanding Female Performer. The Seawolves finished with 137 team points, NNU and WWU had 133 points each and Seattle Pacific ended up with 121.
