MONMOUTH – Western Oregon University is pleased to announce the completion of a summer-long track renovation at McArthur Stadium that will allow for high-level competition to continue at the facility for years to come.

Renovation of the track, completed by Texas based Hellas Construction, produced a wider and faster track that will allow top-level athletes to compete on a surface that meets the standards of the International Association of Athletics Federation.

"We are excited the stadium track resurfacing project has been completed," said Barbara Dearing, WOU Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "This will enable all of our teams to train and compete on the very best surface possible for competition.  We've got a great men's and women's track and field/cross country team coming back this year, so I'm excited about the new surface and what it will mean for them as they start the new school year."

Construction began shortly after the completion of the 2015 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships last May. Hellas Construction stripped the former overlay and installed their epiQ Tracks x1000 surface. According to the company's website (hellasconstruction.com), the track's seamless binding single layer eliminates the need for a rubber dust application. The new track at McArthur Stadium needs less maintenance and will endure through longer periods of competition.

The track was last resurfaced in 2005, at that time with a prototype surface.

"The timing of the project could not have come at a better time with Western Oregon University serving as host for the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championship in November 2015, and the GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May 2016," Dearing added.  There's a new surface in town, and WOU has it!"

Student-athletes have already begun to utilize the track for preparation for the 2015 fall season.

The public can get a view of the brand new track on Sept. 12 when Western Oregon opens its 2015 football home schedule against GNAC-foe Simon Fraser at 1 p.m.
