WOU duo opens outdoor season with Linfield 10k

McMINNVILLE, Ore.—Opening up the outdoor season with the track's longest event, Western Oregon University's Sawyer Heckard and Cassie McKinney set personal records in the 10,000-meter run while competing at Linfield's Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker on Friday evening.

Making her debut at the distance, McKinney clocked a time of 39 minutes, 37.17 seconds to jump into the school's all-time performance list. McKinney's time enters the list in the No. 9 position and stands a mere three seconds from the next spot on the chart.

In his second career attempt at the 25-lapper, Heckard crossed the line in 32:49.01 for nearly a two-minute improvement over his mark of 34:37.70 set almost two years ago at the john Knight Twilight.

The bulk of the team will return to action on Saturday with a quick trip to Salem for the Willamette Opener. Field events are set to begin at 10 a.m. at McCulloch Stadium while track events are scheduled for an 11 a.m. initiation.
