McMINNVILLE, Ore.—Opening up the outdoor season with the track's longest event, Western Oregon University's
Sawyer Heckard and
Cassie McKinney set personal records in the 10,000-meter run while competing at Linfield's Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker on Friday evening.
Making her debut at the distance, McKinney clocked a time of 39 minutes, 37.17 seconds to jump into the school's all-time performance list. McKinney's time enters the list in the No. 9 position and stands a mere three seconds from the next spot on the chart.
In his second career attempt at the 25-lapper, Heckard crossed the line in 32:49.01 for nearly a two-minute improvement over his mark of 34:37.70 set almost two years ago at the john Knight Twilight.
The bulk of the team will return to action on Saturday with a quick trip to Salem for the Willamette Opener. Field events are set to begin at 10 a.m. at McCulloch Stadium while track events are scheduled for an 11 a.m. initiation.
