Land Rushes for Pair of Touchdowns in Season Opener at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Omari Land rushed for a pair of touchdowns, while Ty Currie threw for 202 yards and a touchdown as the Western Oregon University football team opened the 2019 season at Angelo State Thursday night. The Rams were able to use a 28-0 run over the second and third quarters to defeat the Wolves 45-20.

The total offensive yards were close with Angelo State holding a slight 454-399 edge, as the Rams outrushed the Wolves 238-197 and 216-202 through the air. Each team tallied 22 first downs and WOU dominated time of possession at 37:24 to 22:36.

A strong defensive start opened the game for the Wolves as they forced a quick three-and-out, but on the punt, WOU fumbled the return and Angelo State took over deep in Wolves' territory. Despite starting at the WOU 11, the defense again held strong forcing another three-and-out and a field goal attempt that was made from 24-yards out by Connor Flanigan for the 3-0 lead at the 12:56 mark of the opening quarter.

Western Oregon responded with a lengthy drive that covered 75 yards and chewed up over four minutes off the clock. During the drive Currie picked up a big first down on third-and-11 when he rushed for 13. Later on another third down, Currie moved the chains with a four-yard rush. Following a big 37-yard strike from Currie to Thomas Wright had WOU at the Angelo State 15. A Nico Jackson 12-yard run helped set the table for Land's first touchdown of the night from two yards out to push WOU to the 7-3 lead with 8:39 to play in the first quarter.

The Rams then answered back on the ensuing drive and scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to move out to a 24-7 lead. Ryan Minniti and the WOU defense helped keep the Rams off the board early in the quarter when Minniti jumped on a fumble at the Wolves' nine.

Angelo State kept the momentum going in the third quarter putting up a pair of touchdowns to jump out to the 38-7 lead. An early score in the fourth quarter had the Rams looking at a 45-7 lead when the Wolves came back with a 12 play, 76-yard drive. A big 28-yard pass from Currie to Marquis Sampson helped erase a second-and-22 and after a 12-yard run from Currie, Land capped the drive with a six-yard run to the end zone leaving Angelo State with the 45-13 lead.

One last drive closed the scoring when Western Oregon marched on a 13 play, 96-yard drive that took over five minutes. Currie found Tyler Reid several times on the drive, including a 47-yard pass down to the Angelo State five. Two plays later, Currie hit Damon Hickok for the five-yard touchdown and the final score of 45-20.

Currie ended up completing 15-26 for 202 yards and a touchdown, while Land powered the rushing attack with 82 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Currie added 60 yards on the ground and Jackson rushed for 55 yards. Reid caught two passes for 61 yards, Sampson added four catches for 60 yards and Wright had two receptions for 44 yards.

On defense, Jaylin Parnell and Joey Sinclair led the way with eight tackles apiece. Curtis Anderson, Nate Proctor, Tyler Wharf and Blayne Burnett all had six tackles. Derek Parnell added an interception.

Larry Johnson caught six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Keke Chism added seven catches for 57 yards.
