CORVALLIS, Ore. – Caitlin Heldt had a race to remember Friday night at the Oregon State High Performance Meet. Not only did she set the new school record in the 5,000, she smashed her previous season-best time by over 70 seconds when she crossed with a time of 17:08.22. She finished second overall in the event going against 28 total in the field and just beat out Kennedy Rufener's previous program top time of 17:08.51. Heldt's time is also an NCAA Provisional Mark.
"I truly wasn't expecting that time going into the race, which made it even more exciting," Heldt said. "Afterwards, I was like, woah okay, I have so much more inside me and I am extremely motivated for more."
Hunter Hutton improved his time again in the 1,500 coming in with a time of 3:48.57 to move to fifth on the all-time program list in the event. He competed in the invitational coming in fifth overall.
Justin Crosswhite moved to ninth on the program all-time list in the 1,500 when he crossed with a time of 3:50.61 to come in second. He finished just .33 behind the top finisher. It was a big field with 29 total competitors in the event.
Jenelle Hurley continued to improve her season-best and personal-best marks in the long jump when she hit a distance of 18-01.50 to put her into 10th on the WOU all-time program list in the event. Overall, she placed seventh on Friday.
Bailey Smith was close to breaking into the top-10 in program history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase coming in first with a time of 9:18.34.
Ashley Hauger set a new season-best in the 1,500 when she crossed at 4:55.75 to place seventh.
Jalon Fields had a strong finish in the long jump when he reached a distance of 22-10 to come in sixth. Deshaun Stevens nearly hit his season-best in the event coming in 10th with a distance of 21-05.25. Marlon Harrison placed 18th in the event.
Michaela Yonkman set a new season-best in the 400-meter hurdles when she crossed at 1:04.75 to place 10th. Ana Popchock also entered in the event for the Wolves coming in 12th with a time of 1:06.05.
Karsten Collins set a new season-best throw in the hammer with a distance of 155-09 to come in 10th. He also competed in the discus hitting a mark of 141-11 to come in 13th.
Sam Cole also entered in the hammer throw hitting a distance of 152-06 to come in 12th.
Owen Collins entered in the discus throw hitting a mark of 142-06 to come in 12th.
Aaron Hanible was just behind his season-best time in the 400-meter hurdles crossing at 56.25 to come in fourth.
Dustyn McKenney came in 10th in the 1,500 Open.
Lauren Berry and Amity Deters also competed in the long jump with Berry coming in 15th and Deters in 21st.
Also competing in the 1,500 main race was Timothy Rambo coming in 13th and Adam Alnazer in 29th.
Dominic Giordano and Keanu Daos also competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Giordano coming in fifth and Daos in sixth.
Miguel Villar entered his first 5,000 of the season coming in 18th.
Moana Gianotti came in 18th in the discus and 21st in the hammer throw. Liliana Lyness-Morales also competed in the hammer coming in 23rd.
Following what was a very busy Friday, WOU will return to Corvallis to compete in the second day of the Oregon State High Performance on Saturday morning with events starting around 11 a.m.
