PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams secured a total of six event wins and added two more marks to the top-10 record books during day one of the George Fox/Portland Indoor meet on Saturday.
Maya Hopwood opened the day tallying the win in the women's 60-meter posting a time of 7.93. In the women's shot put, Moana Gianotti came away with the first-place throw hitting a mark of 40-10.50. Owen Collins added a win in the men's shot put with a mark of 45-3. In the triple jumps, Ana Popchock grabbed the win in the women's event hitting a distance of 36-4.75. Marlon Harrison secured the win in the men's event with a distance of 44-3.50. Collins rounded out the event wins for the Wolves in the men's weight throw when he hit a mark of 51-3.
Three marks moved into the top-10 in WOU program history on the day. Maliyah Thompson moved to eighth on the all-time list in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 8.06. Thompson then added a time of 9.17 in the women's 60-meter hurdles to also move to eighth in program history. Popchock's mark of 36-4.75 in the women's triple jump is another top-10 mark this indoor season for Popchock and just off her season-best from the indoor opener at Spokane.
To open the day, Hopwood, Thompson, Josie Lavato and Taryn Wilson all qualified for the Wolves in the women's 60-meter. During the finals, Hopwood cruised to the title with a time of 7.93. Lavato followed with a time of 8.40 to come in fourth and Wilson crossed at 8.49 to place sixth. Thompson didn't race in the final.
In the men's 60-meter dash prelims, James Mazzeo paced the Wolves coming in 11th with a time of 7.54, followed by Eli Nafziger in 14th with a time of 7.61.
In the women's 60 hurdles, Thompson won the prelims, followed by Popchock in second, Amity Deters came in eighth and Hailey Blue in ninth as all four qualified for the final. In the finals, Popchock led the way coming in second with a time of 9.39, followed by Thompson in third with a time of 9.53 and Deters came in eighth. Blue didn't race in the final.
In the men's 60 hurdles, all four qualified with Gabe Burchfield leading the way coming in fifth, followed by Aaron Hanible in sixth, JJ Walker in seventh and Brennen Sorah in eighth. Sorah turned it on for the final as he ended up leading the Wolves coming in second with a time of 8.74. Burchfield was right behind with a time of 8.88 to come in third. Hanible nearly posted the same time crossing at 8.89 to come in fifth, followed by Walker in sixth.
Kalulusno Ngaida and Jenelle Hurley competed in the women's high jump with Ngaida coming in third with a mark of 5-2.25 and Hurley in fifth hitting a distance of 5-0.25.
Devin Hasher came in fifth in the men's high jump hitting a height of 5-10.75.
Five Wolves entered in the men's long jump with Harrison leading the way coming in fourth with a distance of 20-8. Burchfield, Walker and Mazzeo all finished within a few marks of each other with Burchfield coming in fifth with a distance of 20-1.75, Walker in sixth with a distance of 20-1.5 and Mazzeo in seventh with a distance of 20-1. Sorah rounded out the group coming in eighth.
Deters hit a mark of 16-9.75 in the women's long jump to come in second.
Gianotti led four Wolves in the women's shot put taking home the title with a throw of 40-10.5. Halle Hargett came in fifth with a throw of 33-6.50. Hurley came in eighth and Deters rounded out the group for the Wolves coming in 11th.
Collins led the way in the men's shot put with his first-place throw of 45-3. Walker also competed for the Wolves and came in eighth.
Popchock posted her new top-10 program mark in the women's triple jump hitting a distance of 36-4.75. Ngaida wasn't far behind with a distance of 35-6.75 to come in second. Logan Jackson added a mark of 33-2.50 to come in fourth.
Harrison won the men's triple jump with a mark of 44-3.50, while Jacob Flurry came in third hitting a distance of 39-11.25.
Liliana Lyness-Morales paced the Wolves in the women's weight throw coming in second with a distance of 42-9.75. Emillia Carpenter had the third-best throw on the day with a mark of 41-6. Hargett also competed for WOU coming in eighth.
In the men's weight throw, Collins picked up the title with his throw of 51-3. Mark Warren also competed in the event for the Wolves coming in second with a distance of 49-0.75.
