MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University men's track & field team stands tied for second with 54 points after day one of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Champions (May 14), while the women's team is in fourth with 38 points.
Carolanne Powers won the women's javelin toss with a throw of 154-9 (47.19m), the third longest throw in Division II this season. That mark improved upon her NCAA auto qualifying standard of 154-0 which also came at home in the friendly surroundings of McArthur Field. Powers captured the 10 team points for the Wolves, while winning the event by over seven feet and moving into third place in conference history.
Jason Slowey earned 10 team points for the Western Oregon men's team when he threw the shot put a season-best distance of 54-0 (16.46m). That mark was the third longest in the history of the GNAC and moved him into fourth place in school history. His throw also upon his NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Slowey was also the GNAC's indoor shot put champion. Slowey also grabbed eight more team points for the men by finishing second in the discus with a throw of 156-5 (47.68m).
Ashley Potter defended her title from the indoor meet in the women's long jump. She leaped a GNAC season-best 18-4.25 (5.59m). That mark garnered the Wolves' women's team 10 points while propelling her to seventh in school history and into a tie for 10th in GNAC history.
Lacey Meusec also grabbed one team point in the event by placing eighth (17-4.75/5.30m).
Amanda Schumaker placed third in the javelin with a season-best throw of 146-6 (44.66m) to snag six more team points for the women's team. That throw moved her into seventh place in the country. Caitlyn Morris added one more point to bring the Wolves' total to 17 in the event, and account for nearly half their total on day one (17 of 38).
The men's team also picked up 12 points in the long jump, as
Jake Hyde finished third,
Matson Hardie fourth and
Robert Wegner eighth. Hyde recorded a leap of 22-1.50 (6.74m), while Hardie went 21-8.25 (6.61m) and Wegner 20-11.25 (6.38m).
Dan Sprinkle and
Robert Wegner picked up four points apiece for the men's team by placing fifth in their respective events. Sprinkle ran a 9:35.23 in the 3000m steeplechase and
Robert Wegner cleared 6-2.75 (1.90m) in the high jump.
Jordan Werner won the preliminary portion of the men's 110m hurdles with a career-best time of 15.09. That time was the second fastest in the conference this season. It will move him into the finals on Saturday.
Individuals on the men's team which finished in the top eight of the preliminaries and qualified for the finals on Saturday included:

Ashtin Mott (49.07) in the 400m;
Jeff Long (1:54.02),
Carson O'Brien (1:54.45) and
Kyle Larson (1:54.5) in the 800m;
Andy Loscutoff (15:29) in the 110m hurdles; and Loscutoff (55.07) in the 400m hurdles.
Women qualifying for the finals included:

Sarah Kathrein (25.79) in the 200m;
Lexi Pola (58.72),
Meryl Butcher (58.83) and
Crystal McDowell (1:00.08) in the 400m;
Janelle Everetts (2:16.13) in the 800m;
Kaitlyn Reid (14.87) and Janna Vader Meulen (15.48) in the 100m hurdles; and Reid (1:04.44) in the 400m hurdles.
Western Washington's men's team leads the event with 91 points, while its women's team is tied for first with Seattle Pacific with 68.5 points.
The meet will conclude Saturday, May 15. The field events will begin at 10:45 a.m., with the women's hammer throw and the field events will start at 12:30 p.m., with the women's 4x100m relay.
