MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon volleyball team closes out a four-game road swing this week when they visit Simon Fraser Thursday, Oct. 24, and No. 6 Western Washington Saturday, Oct. 26.
Western Oregon (3-14, 1-9 GNAC) will have to face two of the top three teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this week as the Clan and Vikings hold a combined GNAC mark of 16-4.
The Wolves are attempting to snap a five-game losing streak, last winning Oct. 3 in Lacey against the Saint Martin's Saints, 3-1. Last week, WOU fell in straight sets to both Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene on the road.
Western carries a team hitting percentage of .175 over 57 sets and a kill rate of 10.77 per set. They have totaled 102.0 blocks this season, averaging 1.79 per set – good for 7
th in the conference.
Delaney Smith remains second in GNAC hitting percentage at .361 and just .002 off Western Washington's Kayleigh Harper for the conference lead.
Allyson Crisp is not far behind at 6
th with a .287 percentage.
Simon Fraser (11-7, 7-3 GNAC) enters the week third in the conference and 1.5 games back of Alaska Anchorage for 2
nd. The Clan topped the Wolves 3-0 in their first meeting of the year, holding WOU to 13 points in each of the first two games of the match.
SFU has won five straight matches, including three which went five sets. Their last loss was suffered Oct. 1, 3-1, at Western Washington.
WOU is 6-9 against Simon Fraser all-time. The Clan have won nine straight in the series including four straight sweeps. Western's last win over SFU was on Oct. 27, 2012, and their last win in Burnaby came on Sept. 27, 2012. WOU is 3-4 on the road in the series.
Western Washington (17-1, 9-1 GNAC) suffered their first loss of the season last week, losing 3-1 at Alaska Anchorage. The slip up dropped the Vikings to the No. 6 ranking in the latest NCAA Division II AVCA Coaches Poll, losing four spots in the national rankings. It was WWU's first conference loss since Sept. 16, 2017.
The Vikings are currently 3
rd in NCAA Division II with a 2.65 blocks per set average and 5
th in the nation with a .280 hitting percentage.
WOU is 3-24 against WWU all-time. The Vikings have won 11 straight in the series including four straight sweeps. Western Oregon's last win in the series was Nov. 6, 2008, in Monmouth. They have never won in Bellingham, going 0-13 on the road in the series. Their last set win against WWU was Oct. 1, 2016.
