Cross Country Posts Solid Results in Season Opener at Ash Creek Invitational

MONMOUTH, Ore. –
The Western Oregon University cross country teams opened the 2019 season with the annual Ash Creek Invitational that took place at the Ash Creek Preserve on the campus of WOU Friday evening. The women had a real strong showing placing second, while the men placed 11th.

On the women's side, WOU came in second only to Division I University of Oregon as the Ducks tallied 16 points and the Wolves collected 90. Rounding out the top-three was Willamette in third with 117 points. Twelve total teams competed in the women's 4k race. On the men's side, Oregon also took the title with 15 points, as Lane was second with 98 points and George Fox rounded out the top-three with 129 points. WOU posted 253 points to come in 11th as 15 total teams competed in the men's 6k race.

On the women's side, Kaylin Cantu ran a strong race throughout placing 11th with a time of 15:41.7. The Wolves stayed strong together as a pack with Cassie McKinney right behind in 15th with a time of 16:00.1 and Olivia Jimenez in 17th with a time of 16:18.0. Jillian Green nearly made it four in the top-20 as she crossed with a time of 16:23.2 to come in 22nd. Rachel Bayly clocked in with a time of 16:34.0 to place 30th, Faeryn Glasscock crossed in 47th with a time of 17:05.1, Natalie Pihulak finished in 74th with a time of 18:18.8, Michaele Yonkman came in 90th with a time of 19:16.7, Ana Popchock crossed in 103rd with a time of 21:52.2 and Sarra Soladey in 110th with a time of 24:02.2.

On the men's side, the Wolves raced with six as Bryce Mefford and Curt Knott stayed together throughout the race with the two finishing right next to each other. Mefford ended up edging out Knott with a time of 19:39.8 to place 27th and Knott right behind in 28th with a time of 19:41.4. Tyler Tenny was the next one to cross for the Wolves in 58th with a time of 20:42.5. Max Carmona posted a mark of 22:03.2 to place 80th, Gabriel Arce-Torres came in with a time of 23:13.1 to place 95th and Mitchell Kruse added a time of 24:09.5 to finish 100th.

WOU will continue to host more this weekend in the Ash Creek Invitational taking part in the high school invitational tomorrow (Saturday). The Wolves will return to action on Sept. 20 when they will once again be home to host the Sundowner Invitational.
