MONMOUTH, Oregon --- The Western Oregon men's and women's cross country teams host the Mike Johnson Classic on Friday at the Ash Creek Preserve Cross Country Course in Monmouth.
The women's 6K race is set for 11 a.m. while the men's 8K race is slated to start at 11:45 a.m. - held at a course that has hosted the GNAC Championships five times (it will be six as the Wolves are hosting this season), the NCAA DII West Regional Championship four times and was the host of the 2019 Pac-12 Championships.
The WOU women are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Ash Creek Collegiate in Monmouth two weeks ago, led by
Holly Hutton who took ninth with a time of 18:21.6 in the 5K race.
Riley Smith finished 12th (18:40.2),
Ali Clifton took 19th (19:05.5),
Katie Chapman finished 27th (19:32.9) and
Natalie Perez took 30th (19:56.7) closed out the Wolves' scoring.
The WOU men took third at the event were led by GNAC athlete of the week
Hunter Hutton who won the 6K race with a time of 17:51.20 - eight seconds faster than the next racer.Â
Bailey Smith also finished in the top five for the Wolves, taking fifth with a time of 18:05.3. He was followed by
Emmett Klus (18:33.5 - 17th),
Logan Parker (18:37.7 - 20th) and
Easton Pomrankey (18:43.6 - 22nd) to close out the scoring for WOU.
This will be the Wolves' final home race until hosting the GNAC Championships on Nov. 5. They will have two races before that at the Lewis and Clark Invitational in Portland on Oct. 15 and at the NCAA D2 Pre Nationals in Seattle on Oct. 22.
