MONMOUTH, Ore. ---The Western Oregon cross country team captured both team titles at the Mike Johnson Classic at Ash Creek Preserve Friday morning.Â
The women's team secured its first team win of the season, scoring a total of 38 points and placing three runners in the top 10 in the 6-kilometer race. After leading the entire race, Caitlin Heldt crossed the finish line first overall in a time of 21 minutes and 15 seconds, setting a new meet record by 31 seconds. Riley Smith secured fifth place with a time of 22:03, while Holly Hutton claimed eighth place with a time of 22:27. Katie Chapman's time of 22:47 was enough for 11th place. Olivia Flack ran a strong final kilometer to secure 15th place in 23:14, and Joelle Upshur rounded out the Wolves' scoring in 16th place, crossing the finish line in 23:16.
Displaying depth, the women's team had their seventh through 10th runners finish in the top 30. Ali Clifton, Kaydence Nguyen, and Natalie Perez finished in 18th, 21st, and 26th place. Kyla Potratz and Charlotte Falstad crossed the finish line in 28th and 29th place.
The men's team also clinched its first team title of the season, scoring a dominant 18 points in the first 8-kilometer race of the season. The Wolves were led by freshman Kanoa Blake, who secured the individual title in 24:41. Closely behind, Easton Pomrankey claimed second place, running in 24:47. Grant Bohannon, Keeton Sanche, and Logan Parker finished in sixth, seventh and eighth places. Cedar Davis-Frankfort finished in 10th place making him the sixth WOU runner in the top 10.
The men's team also displayed their depth as they had nine runners run under 26 minutes. Jordan Kemper, Isaiah Rodriguez and Bryce Mefford finished 11th, 12th and 13th. Ethan Bothwell and Henry Michener placed 14th and 15th.
The Wolves will spend the next two weeks preparing for the San Francisco State Invite at Golden Gate Park on Oct. 8.
