Jim played basketball for the Wolves from 1982-85 and was the head coach of the Western Oregon men's basketball team from 2015-19. During his playing days, he earned NAIA All-American honorable mention in 1983-84, and was an all-region first team selection. Jim led the Wolves in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists during the 1984-85 season and was named Evergreen Conference MVP.
As a long-time collegiate assistant coach, Jim re-turned to his alma mater to lead the Wolves men's basketball team in 2015. While he inherited a talented group of players, he was quick to recruit a strong incoming class to round out his program. In 2015-16, Coach Shaw was named GNAC Coach of the Year and the NCAA West Region Coach of the Year after leading the team to the GNAC and West Region championship titles before falling to Augustana in the NCAA Final Four.
