A two-time NAIA distance All-American in the late 1980's, Tilgner still holds the WOU school record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:44.27 (1987), a whopping six seconds faster than the second listing. He placed second at NAIA nationals in the event and is still third all-time at WOU in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:45.50. Tilgner captured district championships in both events and is a two-time NAIA District 2 cross country champion. He remains the only runner in school history to win a district cross country meet twice. Tilgner finished his cross country career with All-American honors after finishing in 27th-place at the national meet.
