Hall of Fame
Perhaps the most recognizable figure associated with Western Oregon athletics over the past 36 years, Carey has assumed the role of coach, administrator and leader, and excelled in every area. He served as the Athletic Director of the school from 1993-2010, during which time he led WOU in the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. Carey was also the guiding force behind the Wolves capturing the 2007-08 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top athletic program in the conference. He began at Western Oregon as an assistant coach on the football team in 1975 and would eventually take over the women's basketball team. During Carey's tenure as the head coach, the Western Oregon women's basketball team reached its 'golden age'. The Wolves won 75 percent of their games during Carey's 16 years at the helm, including reaching the NAIA Championship in 1994. Western Oregon also recorded 13 of their 16 20-win seasons under Carey's leadership and 13 conference titles. Many of the players he coached would go on to lead Western Oregon to back-to-back National titles in 1995 and 1996.
